If your child or teenager is struggling with their mental health and you’re looking for a psychiatrist in the New Orleans area, you want someone with both specialized training and a compassionate, family-centered approach. Dr. Antoinette Laurel is a double board-certified psychiatrist in Adult and Child & Adolescent Psychiatry who completed her residency and Child & Adolescent Psychiatry fellowship training at LSU New Orleans, as well as one year of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry fellowship training at University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson.

"Dr. Laurel is very patient and helpful. She offers me tips beyond medication. She’s very mindful about prescribing medications, and sees if there are other solutions outside of medication first beforehand. I really appreciate this, because it feels like she’s genuine about helping me and not covering up my problems with pills."
"My experience with Dr. Laurel was so wonderful and refreshing. I didn't feel like I was being rushed through the appointment. I felt like she really, truly listened to my concerns, and she asked many specific and relevant questions which made me feel like she was putting actual effort into creating a plan that worked for my specific needs."

FAQs
At what age do you see children?
Dr. Laurel provides care for patients starting at age 5.
Do you prescribe meds for children?
Yes. Medication is considered carefully and thoughtfully, always as part of a comprehensive, individualized treatment plan.
How is integrative psychiatry different from traditional psychiatry?
Traditional psychiatry focuses primarily on diagnosing mental health conditions and managing symptoms through medication and psychotherapy. Integrative psychiatry takes a broader view — it uses those same evidence-based tools, but also considers the biological, lifestyle, and environmental factors that contribute to mental health, including sleep quality, nutrition, stress, and physical activity.
Rather than treating symptoms in isolation, an integrative psychiatrist looks at the whole person and may incorporate approaches such as targeted supplements, lab-based assessments, and mind-body practices alongside conventional treatment. Medication remains an important part of the toolkit when clinically indicated — the difference is that it is considered within a broader, more individualized plan rather than as the default first response.
Do you offer in-person or virtual appointments?
Dr. Laurel offers in-person appointments to families residing in New Orleans and the surrounding area. Louisiana residents who live further away and are not able to travel may schedule virtual appointments.
